Scoops or small cosmetic spoons (ligula) were also common, especially in the Roman period.

These would have been used to scoop and mix loose substances such as powders, which may have been mixed up to produce make-up for Roman women.

A pale complexion was fashionable and was achieved by applying white lead or chalk to the skin. The Romans didn't know it at the time but some of their make-up, such as lead for example, was highly poisonous and was a dangerous health hazard!
